Description

Our volunteers make a difference. They bring a variety of skills, experience, and backgrounds that support our patients, clients, and residents in communities all across Northern BC, complementing the care provided by our professional staff.  As a volunteer, you gain personal satisfaction from helping others, meet new people, learn more about our health care system, and get relevant experience for your future employment or education.

Steps to becoming a volunteer:

  1. Apply: Complete the volunteer application form
  2. Interview: Qualifying candidates will be invited to an in-person, phone or virtual interview
  3. Screening: We will coordinate the required screenings (criminal record check, reference checks, driver’s abstract (if appropriate), etc.)
  4. Orientation: You will be provided with an online orientation, training and site orientation.

We have multiple volunteer opportunities as listed below.

  • Activity Assistant Volunteers (Long-Term Care or Assisted Living) contribute to group activities through meaningful and helpful interactions and improve the overall functioning of the group activity. Shifts are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 3 pm.
  • Care to Talk Virtual Technology Volunteers support hospital clients through facilitating set-up of social engagement interactions with loved ones using the Care to Talk virtual technology platform. Location:  University Hospital of Northern BC.  Days/Times: Flexible including evening and weekends.  Volunteers are asked to commit to filling one 2-hour shift per week.
  • Food services CBORD Support Volunteers enhance the quality of experience for hospital clients by providing support and non-clinical assistance to clients accessing the online meal selection software.  Location: UHNBC.  Days/Times:  7 days per week from 4 to 6pm. Volunteers are asked to commit to filling one 2-hour shift per week.
  • Gardening Program Support Volunteers (at Gateway Lodge LTC) assist the dietitian with the on-site garden program to provide support for residents to participate in valued and meaningful activities and enhance their nutrition and quality of life. Shift times are flexible.
  • Hemodialysis Unit Support Volunteers enhance the quality of experience for hospital clients by providing support and non-clinical assistance to clients of UHNBC Hemodialysis Unit.  Location: University Hospital of Northern BC. Days/Times:  Tue/Wed 9 to 11am and 2 to 4pm. Volunteers are asked to commit to filling one 2-hour shift per week.
  • Information Desk and Wayfinding Volunteers help direct clients and visitors to UHNBC by providing directions, escorting visitors to find their appointment locations, and answering general information questions.  Location: University Hospital of Northern BC. Volunteers are asked to commit to filling one 3-hour shift per week.
  • Mealtime Volunteers (at Jubilee Lodge) support clients during mealtimes through helpful interactions and social engagement to improve the overall enjoyment and satisfaction at mealtimes. Shifts are 430pm-630pm, 7 days a week. Volunteers are asked to fill one shift/week.

Volunteer opportunities are subject to change, however, new programs are always being created.
